Botswana is a land of untamed beauty and is blessed with some of earth’s greatest wilderness areas. It is a landlocked country in Southern Africa about the size of Texas, and borders Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. It has become known as an authentic wild safari experience in one of Africa’s most beautiful and remote locations.Formerly the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana was renamed after its independence on 30th September 1966. Not long after independence, the country discovered its unique resource of diamonds, and has since transformed into one of the fastest growing economies in the world. A democratic government and civil peace have also earned Botswana the reputation of being one of Africa’s most stable countries.
The country spans approximately 600 000km, but is home to just over 2 million inhabitants, making it one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. What it does have in great numbers is elephants, along with an abundance of other species.
With its vast array of deserts, grasslands and wetlands, Botswana encompasses the rich diversity and intense beauty of a unique African landscape. A landscape defined by the Kalahari Desert and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (the world’s second largest Game Reserve); the Chobe National Park; the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans (which are the size of Portugal and visible from space); and the Okavango Delta (the world’s largest inland delta which becomes a lush animal paradise during the seasonal floods).
Fossilised river valleys and swelling grasslands are home to a variety of animals. Botswana is the last stronghold for endangered bird and mammal species such as Brown Hyena, Cape Vulture, Wild Dog, Cheetah, Kori Bustard and Pel’s Fishing Owl – to name a few.
More than 38% of the country’s total land area is dedicated to wildlife management, mostly unfenced and therefore allowing animals to roam freely. This unique “high value – low impact” approach to tourism has resulted in a thriving natural environment where the concept of exclusivity finds true expression.
