AUSTRIAN AIRLINES INCREASES CAPE TOWN ROUTE
Austrian Airlines is set to increase flights between Vienna and Cape Town over the Christmas and New Year period, offering a third weekly flight from 25 December to 7 January and from 23 January to 18 February. The additional flight will depart Vienna International Airport at 10:15am and arrive at Cape Town International Airport at 10:40pm. The return flight will depart Cape Town at 00h20, and arrive in Vienna at 10:50am.
EASTERN CAPE: BOARDWALK PRECINCT DEVELOPMENT
A R600m redevelopment project at the Boardwalk Precinct in Port Elizabeth which will more than double the retail space, is set to commence early next year. Set to be completed by 2021, the Boardwalk Precinct’s retail component will increase to 26 000m². The upgrades will amplify leisure and retail options by integrating more shops, restaurants, family entertainment and the new Sun Park Square designed to host major events. As part of the development, R11m will be invested in upgrading surrounding roads. Second Avenue will be widened into 4 lanes and it will include a new entrance into the Boardwalk Mall, with another on Marine Drive.
BOTSWANA: JAO CAMP REOPENS
Following a recent renovation, Wilderness Safaris has reopened Jao Camp in the Okavango Delta. The camp has revealed 2 new exclusive villas with a private vehicle, guide, chef and butler. The camp includes a new main area which is elevated into the tree canopy, with the new villas and suites all featuring private plunge pools, a lounge, dining areas and en-suite bathrooms including indoor and outdoor showers. Jao’s new spa has 2 new circular treatment rooms and there is a fully equipped gym with a main pool that projects over the floodplain. The camp boasts a new Centre of Knowledge Museum and Gallery and the camp is 100% solar powered.
UGANDA: MARRIOTT OPENS NEW HOTEL
Marriott International has opened the Protea Hotel Kampala Skyz in Uganda, which features 141 rooms, 13 boardrooms, 2 conference rooms accommodating up to 150 guests and a fully equipped business centre. Features include a Presidential Suite and a variety of restaurants and bars, with a unique rooftop cocktail bar.
ZIMBABWE: MACK AIR AND AIR ZIMBABWE LAUNCH NEW SERVICE
In Harare on 4 July, Mack Air and Air Zimbabwe have entered an agreement to launch a new domestic and regional air service called Flame Lilly Hoppa. The new partnership between the 2 airlines includes the launch of a daily domestic scheduled air service between Victoria Falls, Harare and major tourist destinations including Hwange, Kariba and Chiredzi. The agreement also includes services to camps and lodges within the major tourism hubs on an anticipated per seat basis. Other services include the launch of a daily regional scheduled air service between Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa and Mozambique.
ZIMBABWE: MANA POOLS LODGE DIVERSIFIES
Mana Pools Safari Lodge, the only permanent lodge in Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools area, has diversified from the current groups market, to include fully independent travellers (FITs). The lodge features 12 modern en-suite thatched cottages, with a central main dining room, lounge and decks offering guests views of the flood plains and the Zambezi River.
