GAUTENG: JHB/VIC FALLS ROUTE INTRODUCED IN AUGUST

Independent airline, Airlink, will launch daily direct return flights between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls from August 15, reconnecting the region’s main economic hub with the iconic tourism destination.

This follows approvals by Zimbabwe and South Africa’s aviation authorities for the extension of Airlink’s current services between the two countries to include the route between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls. A 98-seat Embraer E-190 jet will be deployed on this route.

WESTERN CAPE: FRANSCHHOEK TO LEVERAGE GLOBAL RECOGNITION IN TIME MAGAZINE

The town of Franschhoek in the Western Cape hopes to leverage its recent global recognition – where it was named as one of Time magazine’s ‘World’s Greatest Places’ for 2022 – to grow domestic and international tourism numbers to its ‘French Corner’.

The Time magazine collection includes 50 destinations around the world that Time’s correspondents and contributors nominated as worth exploring because of the destination’s offering of “new and exciting experiences”.

WESTERN CAPE: UK VISITORS TO CAPE TOWN ARE CLOSE TO PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS

In April 2022, visitor numbers from the UK arriving at Cape Town International Airport recovered to 98% of pre-pandemic levels.

This is according to recent Statistics South Africa arrivals data recorded in April, which confirms a strong recovery for leading Western Cape source markets, when compared with the same period in 2019.

NAMIBIA: NEW ONLINE PORTAL TO EASE NAMIBIAN VIA APPLICATION

The Tour and Safari Association of Namibia (TASA) has launched an online visa application platform to help ease the process for visitors to Namibia.

The web application, developed by TASA, should streamline the process of different kinds of visa applications that are handled by the Ministry of Home Affairs on behalf of the applicant.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK: MEET SOUTH AFRICA’S NEWEST PENGUIN COLONY

Over the past two years, a total of 148 juvenile African penguins have been released at De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape, as conservationists seek to establish a thriving new breeding colony of these endangered seabirds.

The penguins come from existing colonies where they had been abandoned by their parents as eggs or chicks and subsequently hand-reared by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB).
