WESTERN CAPE: GONDWANA RESERVE TO LAUNCH THREE-DAY WALKING SAFARI
Gondwana Game Reserve on the Western Cape’s Garden Route will launch a three-day walking safari in November for groups of eight guests. The Pioneer Trail will allow guests to explore the 11 000-hectare Big-Five game reserve on foot. The route will cover 15 to 20 kilometres over two days, taking guests on exclusive, remote footpaths and game trails to three different remote tented camp locations. Each night is spent in a different unfenced camp. Tents have en-suite bathrooms with claw-foot tubs, and meals are served around the campfire with G&T sundowners.
EASTERN CAPE: ECO-LODGE INNOVATION HUB TO ARRIVE IN AFRICA
Accor Hospitality has unveiled the Eco-Lodge Innovation Hub by Mantis at the Africa Hotel Investment Forum, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from September 23-25. The new concept will be launched early next year at the five-star Mantis Founders Lodge in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, and will bring together conservation partners from across the globe to showcase the future of eco-travel to potential investors and sustainability-minded travellers. The collaboration will see Mantis build five new room models, known as ‘Innovate Hospitality Units’, near the existing lodge. The units will consist of two tents, a pod, a log cabin and a treehouse, which integrate the latest green technology on a site designed to showcase low-impact accommodation and activities to business leaders and future travellers. The rooms will vary in design, look, feel and décor, and will house the latest green technology.
WESTERN CAPE: DE HOOP LODGE CLOSED FOLLOWING FLOODING
Natural Selection’s Lekkerwater Beach Lodge at De Hoop, in South Africa’s De Hoop Nature Reserve, will be closed until November 1 due to flooding, confirmed Colin Bell, Co-founder of Natural Selection and Developer of the Lekkerwater Beach Lodge. The lodge had experienced at least 100ml of rainfall over a 20- to 30-minute period, and while the lodge was flooded there was no serious damage to the structure or the furniture.
LIMPOPO: NEW TIMBAVATI GATE SYSTEM
A new electronic gate system has been implemented and going forward, from the 1st October 2019 all guests need to have their passport / ID document with them when arriving at the reserve.
KENYA: AIR KENYA SUSPENDS SERVICES TO MARA NORTH AIRSTRIP
Air Kenya have issued a notice to passengers that it is suspending service into Mara North Conservancy Airstrip, in the Maasai Mara with immediate effect until further notice due to the current state of the airstrip. The notice says, “If you are holding bookings into Mara North airstrip kindly amend drop/pick up to an alternative airstrip. We suggest Mara Shikar as being the closest to Mara North or any other airstrip convenient to you.”
BOTSWANA: WILDERNESS SAFARIS BOTSWANA LAUNCHES BIOMONITORING PROGRAMME
Wilderness Safaris Botswana recently launched a biodiversity monitoring programme in its Linyanti and Vumbura concessions, with the aim of helping to improve scientific knowledge and management of the area’s biodiversity.
