PREMIER HOTELS & RESORTS EXPANDS
Premier Hotels & Resorts has announced the transfer of the Faircity Hotel Group and its assets and management contracts. The acquisition of these properties adds another 512 rooms to Premier Hotels & Resorts existing portfolio of over 2 000 rooms. The portfolio now features 24 properties in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Eastern and Western Cape. The Premier Splendid Inn in Bloemfontein is set to open in September, as well as 2 new hotels in Umhlanga early next year. Faircity properties will remain under the Faircity brand and trademark to allow for easy recognition and business continuity.

TSOGO SUN CELEBRATES 50 YEARS
Tsogo Sun Hotels is celebrating 50 years of successful growth and an ongoing contribution to the South African hospitality industry, featuring a total of 110 hotels. Tsogo Sun Hotels recently announced the launch of a new ‘limited service’ hotel brand in South Africa called hi HOTELS, catering to the economy sector, with the first 123-room development currently under construction at Montecasino, and is set to open in December 2019.

GAUTENG: NEW BOUTIQUE BUSINESS HOTEL SET TO OPEN
A new boutique business hotel is set to open in Johannesburg, near Lanseria International Airport in the middle of 2019, catering for business travellers, leisure tourists and golfers. Blueberry Hill is situated in Honeydew and will offer spacious, well-appointed rooms, sophisticated conferencing facilities and luxury apartments with views of the Magaliesberg mountains and Johannesburg. The hotel will offer 69 fully serviced 4-star rooms, 15 penthouses, a fully-equipped business centre and business lounge, state-of-the-art conference and meeting rooms, a heated pool, gym and spa and 5 dining venues.

WESTERN CAPE: DIRECT FLIGHTS FROM USA TO CAPE TOWN
A new non-stop flight between North America and Cape Town is set to take off on 15 December 2019. The new service between Cape Town and Newark Liberty International will depart Newark at 8:30am and arrive in Cape Town at 6pm, cutting the travel time by 8 hours.

WESTERN CAPE: PREFERRED HOTELS & RESORTS EXPANDS
The President Hotel in Bantry Bay, Cape Town, is now a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, an independent hotel brand. Guests can enroll in the I Prefer rewards programme, which extends to the brand’s 650 partner locations worldwide and includes benefits like priority early check-in and late check-out, room upgrades and points redeemable for nights and hotel activities.

KENYA: KENYA AIRWAYS INCREASES FREQUENCIES
Due to popular demand, Kenya Airways will increase frequencies to 3 regional tourist destinations in July and August, including Mombasa, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro. Juba in South Sudan and Kigali in Rwanda are also set to receive more flights as a result of increased demand during the peak travel season. Mombasa will get 2 extra flights, bringing the total to 12 daily. The Kilimanjaro route will get an additional flight, bringing the total to 2 daily. The Juba, Zanzibar and Kigali routes will each see an additional flight, with 4 flights a week to Juba (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday); 5 flights to Zanzibar per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday); and daily flights to Kigali. The airline is also set to increase capacity for destinations including Livingstone, Victoria Falls, and Cape Town.

KENYA: LAIKIPIA CAMP GETS A FRESH LOOK
Ekorian’s Mugie Camp in Laikipia recently received a make-over which includes additional rooms being added along with new roofs and new facing on existing tents. The upgrade brings Ekorian’s capacity to 6 rooms, with 2 of them being family rooms that can sleep up to 3 children under 12 years old. The camp features a swimming pool overlooking a watering hole and is surrounded by a stone wall and electric fence, which allows guests to safely walk around the property. Activities offered at the camp include birding, fishing, kayaking, camel treks, golf, hiking, star-gazing and abundant wildlife. Ekorian has also unveiled its ‘new-old’ safari car, called ‘Kifahari’, offering guests an experience of stepping back in time to enjoy wildlife viewing in the open-air-styled car, ideal for photography.

NAMIBIA: AIR NAMIBIA UPS FREQUENCIES
Air Namibia is set to increase flight frequencies that were withdrawn in June after the airline suspended operations to Luanda and reduced frequencies on some flights between Windhoek and Cape Town and Johannesburg. As of 10 August, Air Namibia’s Airbus which received scheduled maintenance checks will return to service. Details of the reintroduced flights are as follows:

  • Windhoek-Johannesburg: Increased from 14 to 21 flights per week
  • Windhoek-Cape Town: Increased from 7 to 14 flights per week. 7 of the rotations will be direct and non-stop, while the other 7 rotations will be via Walvis Bay.
  • Eros-Ondangwa: 2 flights per day reintroduced as per schedule, with 1 in the morning, and the second in the late afternoon.

From 29 July, domestic flights to Lüderitz and Oranjemund will operate from Eros Airport, and no longer from Hosea Kutako International Airport.

NAMIBIA: BON HOTELS EXPANDS
Bon Hotels is expanding its footprint across Namibia with the launch of BON Hotel Ngandu Rundu. The location overlooks the Kavango River’s southern wetlands and riverine forest and the building was originally constructed on the ruins of an old military base. The property features guest rooms, family units and campsites and facilities for local businesses, including 4 conference halls and a restaurant. As of 1 July, The Ngandu at Sea in Walvis Bay will also be managed by BON Hotels and will shortly undergo a refurbishment.

ZIMBABWE: VIC FALLS HIGHWAY UPGRADES
The upgrades at the Beitbridge-Victoria Falls highway in Zimbabwe will help to ease the movement of self-drive tourists between South Africa and Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa. The highway will be widened, with the construction of 2 lanes in each direction, making it a 4-lane highway. Other improvements will include new road signs, visible road marking, re-tarring, and adding reflectors to the edges of the road. Construction on the highway is expected to start during the first half of 2020. The upgraded highway is set to provide easier access to tourist sites like Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls.
