EASTERN CAPE: KELWAY HOTEL REFURBISHMENT
Kelway Hotel in Port Elizabeth will be undergoing renovations from 27 January – 17 February 2020. Renovations will include upgrading the kitchen and a soft refurb of the foyer and public areas. During the renovation period, breakfast and group dinners will be served but the à la carte menu will not be served.
MPUMALANGA: PILGRIM’S REST UPDATE
Pilgrim’s Rest is set to be rejuvenated in an attempt to attract more tourists. The Department of Economic Development and Tourism launched the project to highlight the highly profitable array of established heritage assets, scenic natural sites, and political and industrial histories that must be preserved for posterity. As part of the rejuvenation efforts, the Departments of Economic Development and Tourism and Culture, Sport and Recreation have installed QR codes containing historical information that can instantly be read using a smartphone camera. They are available in the buildings in the main street. The project also plans to beautify Pilgrim’s Rest through landscaping, redesigning and upgrading the signage, to increase the visibility of the places of interest. Vacant properties in the town are set to be upgraded and 8 guest houses have already undergone major renovations.
BOTSWANA: NEW CAMP OPENS IN THE OKAVANGO DELTA
Okavango Hidden Gems recently opened Camp Maru, a 1930s-style safari offering in the Okavango Delta. The camp is situated on a private island in a secluded concession in the southern region of the Okavango Delta on a permanent water channel, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. The main guest areas include an open-air dining tent, the Map Room which is a comfortable lounge area, a bar, swimming pool and a fire pit. The design of the tented bedrooms ensures that the inside temperature is several degrees cooler than outside. The camp is accessible via helicopter from Maun or by game viewing vehicle via pole bridges. Guests can enjoy both land and water activities all year-round, including game drives, guided bush walks and mokoro trips.
KENYA: NEW LUXURY SUITE LAUNCHES
The Geoffrey Kent Suite at Sanctuary Olonana in Kenya combines wildlife with ultra-luxury. The free-flowing space contains 2 private bedrooms, each fully en-suite, and is accessed by a private road. The suite features floor-to-ceiling windows, modern furniture, wraparound decking and a raised infinity pool with a grandstand lookout. Guests can enjoy meals prepared by a private chef in the suite’s own kitchen, a fully stocked bar and a dedicated safari guide and vehicle.
NAMIBIA: NATURAL SELECTION EXPANDS
Natural Selection is set to open their 6th property in Namibia, Kwessi Dune Lodge, in the NamibRand Nature Reserve on 1 March 2020. The 10 thatch and canvas rooms will feature an en suite bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers, a shaded veranda and air-conditioning, and each unit will also have a special ‘star-gazing’ room, as well as the option to sleep outside. Facilities include a bar, library, several seating and dining areas, and a swimming pool. Guests can also enjoy day trips to the nearby Sossusvlei dunes, the Deadvlei and hot-air balloon rides.
TANZANIA: LEMALA MARA SET TO OPEN EARLIER
Lemala Camps and Lodges has announced that Lemala Mara will open from 1 June 2020, a month earlier than normal due to the current patterns of the Great Migration in the Northern Serengeti. The camp is set to relocate back to the Kogatende side, south of the Mara River.
