GAUTENG: RADISSON EXPANDS PORTFOLIO
The Radisson Hotel Group has broken ground on the first Radisson RED hotel in Johannesburg. The Radisson RED Hotel Johannesburg Rosebank is set to open on 1 February 2021 in the centre of the Rosebank shopping district and is walking distance from the Gautrain Station. The hotel will feature 222 rooms, an “all-day dining” Oui Bar & Ktchn and rooftop bar. The hotel will also feature pet-friendly facilities.

LIMPOPO: KWENGA LODGE REOPENS
Following 18 months of renovations, the Kwenga Safari Lodge has reopened and is now officially part of the Greater Kruger National Park. Refurbishments include redesigned and rebuilt rooms and 6 of the 8 rooms are completed, and the lodge is already taking guests. The remaining 2 rooms are set to be completed by December and will feature interleading doors. The lodge has 5 luxury rooms and 3 standard rooms, with each room accommodating up to 2 guests, although an additional bed can be set up in a room for 1 child under the age of 12. Children visiting the lodge have to be 6 years and older. The bathrooms feature indoor and outdoor showers as well as baths in all of the rooms. Wi-Fi capacity and bandwidth at the lodge have also been increased. The lodge has a pool and a lapa area, offering guests views of a waterhole and animal activity.

WESTERN CAPE: AERIAL CABLEWAY EARLY CLOSURE
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will close 2 hours earlier on Wednesday 9 October 2019 due to the Cableway’s 90th Anniversary celebrations with the staff members. Operating times for Wednesday, 9 October are as follows:

  • First car up: 8:30am
  • Last car up: 4pm
  • Last car down: 5pm

The weather forecast predicts strong winds for Wednesday, 9 October 2019 in which case the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will be closed.

WESTERN CAPE: REFURBISHMENT UPDATE AT V&A WATERFRONT
After 10 months of renovations, the V&A Waterfront has completed the first phase of refurbishments and has opened its R180m extension, adding 4 000m2 of retail space to the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre. Recent renovations include adding a third lower level and a parking entrance and 5 undercover parking garages and 4 open parking areas. The second phase is still under construction.

KENYA: NEW TENTED CAMP OPENS IN MASAI MARA
Mara Olodare, a new tented camp has opened in the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, roughly 800 metres from the Oloolaimutia entrance. The semi-luxury tented camp offers eco-friendly facilities, modern amenities and features 8 tents that can accommodate up to 16 guests. Guests can enjoy an outdoor restaurant which features some of Kenya’s famous and traditional dishes made by the on-site chef. Activities at the camp include nature walks, guided Maasai community culture tours, bird watching and game drives.

NAMIBIA: NEW HOTEL IN WALVIS BAY
The Blue Whale Boutique Hotel opened in Walvis Bay on 19 August.  The hotel features 19 rooms, a restaurant, swimming pool and bar facilities.

TANZANIA: AURARI CAMP OPENS
The Aurari Camp, located in Kogatende in the Mara River region of Serengeti National Park, opened in August. Aurari Camp offers seasonal accommodation during the annual wildebeest migration, with easy access to view the herds crossing the Mara River. The 8 tented suites feature a bedroom with a king-sized bed or 2 extra-large single beds, a separate lounge area, bathroom and an outdoor private veranda. The tents are equipped with a radio, a writing desk with stationery and charging facilities for phones and cameras. Bed linen, towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided. Solar energy provides 24-hour power and hot water supply and a personal attendant is appointed to each suite to look after guests. The main tent will serve morning breakfasts and provide an eco-friendly lunchbox for game drives. Dinner consists of a 3-course continental offering alongside Swahili options. Dietary preferences such as vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free can be catered for. Honeymooning couples will have a choice of dining in the main tent or at a romantic bush location.
